Homework has been a subject of controversy for a long time. How important is homework? How much is okay?
Research shows that children who do homework perform better in school. It teaches children to work by themselves, learn good habits, and encourages discipline and responsibility. Homework helps to reinforce what students learned during class.
Reality…
Life happens. We live in a busy world and most children are involved in extra curricular activities. Children need time to be “kids”. How much is okay? It is suggested that 10 minutes per grade level is appropriate. A third grader should have 30 minutes every night. However, I anticipate about 15 minutes each night from my assignments. This will include a Spelling page and a Math page that reinforces skills the children are working on mastering. Under the Website tab there are extra games and exercises you might do with your children.
Homework Tips for Parents:
1. Show you think education is important. Create a place and time for homework.
2. Check it. Do they know what they are supposed to do? Did they do what was expected?
3. Provide guidance, but don’t do the work for them. Third graders should be working independently.
4. Talk with the teacher whenever problems arise. When tears come out it is time to seek help. Please do not let homework become a stressful situation. If it becomes a problem, please just stop doing the work, write a note on the work or send me an email, and put it back in your child's backpack. I never want tears or an argument to develop over school work.
